Admission

Undergraduates and recent graduates who will have completed the equivalent of 2 or 3 semesters of college Spanish (Level A) or at least 4 or 5 semesters (Level B) may apply. Final Level placement is confirmed by a short language test administered during the Orientation. To be admitted, students must demonstrate a reasonably strong academic record and must be recommended by a member of their home faculty (who should include reference to the student’s Spanish linguistic level and ability).

The following documents constitute a full application package:

  1. a primary application form,
  2. a short letter of recommendation,
  3. a transcript of academic record,
  4. a brief written statement of the reasons for applying to the SIHS, and
  5. an application fee of $45 (check made out to “Summer Institute of Hispanic Studies”).

The SIHS maintains a system of rolling admissions and, therefore, priority is given to qualified early applicants. To encourage interested students to apply early, the SIHS has two admission periods:

  1. Early Acceptance: The deadline for receipt of all application materials is February 29, 2024.
  2. Regular Admission: The deadline for receipt of all application material is April 15, 2024.

Students applying for Early Acceptance, in addition to receiving the above mentioned priority of consideration, will be granted a reduction of $300 from the regular fee.

The Summer Institute of Hispanic Studies issues detailed predeparture bulletins for acceptance regarding necessary health and accident insurance coverage, passports, housing in León, travel, medical facilities, etc.
